Charcoal and resin, step by step

Resin needs a coal. Once you have done it twice it takes under five minutes, and the room fills with the oldest incense there is.

Your kit

Method

  1. Grip one tablet with tongs and hold a flame to its edge until sparks run across it.
  2. Lay it on the sand. Give it a few minutes to turn gray all over.
  3. Drop on two or three grains of resin. When they melt away, add a few more.
  4. Leave the coal to burn out completely in the censer; it stays hot long after the smoke stops.

Safety

Work on a heat-proof surface with the window open, keep water away from hot ceramic, and never leave a lit coal.
